PM Modi, UN secretary-general hail Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of ‘Ahimsa’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the beginning of celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary wrote in his blog that Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of ‘Ahimsa’ has the power to unite humanity when terrorism, radicalisation, extremism and mindless hate are dividing nations.

“In a world where terrorism, radicalisation, extremism and mindless hate are dividing nations as well as societies, his clarion calls forf peace and ahimsa have the power to unite humanity.”

Paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi he wrote, “He remains a shining beacon of hope for millions of people across the world who seek a life of equality, dignity, inclusion and empowerment.”

He quoted Sardar Patel as saying – “India is a land of diversity. If there was one person who brought everyone together, made people rise above differences, to fight colonialism and enhanced India’s stature at the world stage, it was Mahatma Gandhi.”

He urged that by our simple actions such as ensuring zero waste of food to imbibing the values of non-violence and togetherness we can follow Gandhi’s vision. He asked people to think about how our actions can contribute to a cleaner and greener environment for the future generations. He mentioned, “Almost eight decades ago, when the threats of pollution were not as much, Gandhiji took to cycling.”

PM Modi quoted one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favourite hymn, “vaishnav jan to tene kahiye je, peer parayee jaane re.” He said it meant that a good soul is one who feels the pain of others. It was this spirit that made him live for others.

The thoughts and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi still are relevant in the 21st century. They remain as essential as they were in his time. They will offer solutions to several problems that the world faces today, Mr Modi said.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres also paid tribute to Gandhi and said he is “humanity’s guide in our troubled world”. He highlighted the significance of the principle of non-violence embraced by Gandhi.

He added, “Gandhi proved that non-violence can change history. Let us be inspired by his courage and conviction as we continue our work to advance peace, sustainable development and human rights for all the people of the world.”
