Akshay Kumar’s ‘Toronto is my home’ video goes viral
A day after Akshay Kumar issued a statement regarding the controversy over his citizenship, an old video of the Bollywood actor went viral on social media where he is calling Toronto as his home.
In the clip, Akshay can be seen addressing a crowd saying, “I must tell you one thing, ‘This is my home. Toronto is my home.’ After I retire from this industry, I’m going to come back here and stay here.”
Akshay had released a statement on Twitter after the actor grabbed headlines for his “non-political” interview with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was later widely trolled for not casting his vote this year.
“I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India, and pay all my taxes in India,” said the actor.
“While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal and non-political, and of no consequence to others. Lastly, I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger,” he added.
People started trolling him and labelling him as a “liar”, a “fake nationalist” and a “hypocrite” as well. His absence from the polling booth made netizens think that it was due to his alleged Canadian citizenship.
