Alia Bhatt-Varun Dhawan starrer film “Kalank” made Rs 21.6 box office collection on the opening day

Abhishek Varman directed bollywood’s love saga Kalank, is breaking records at the box office just a day after the release. The film  made an opening collection of Rs 21.6 crore, making it the highest opening of 2019.  Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Aditya Roy Kapur are in the lead roles.

Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit can be see together in a film after a gap of 22 years. “It was great to work with her again. I was a little nervous, but she made things easy. She’s got terrific command as an actor. We spoke about our kids. In fact, I made my children [Shahraan and Iqra] meet her when they dropped by on the sets”, said Sanjay Dutt.

Kalank is one of the biggest releases of 2019, with a screen count of 4000. The film is story of of family, passion and emotions which embraces six characters who are connected by love and revenge. The drama is set in pre-independent India in 1940s, which will take audience back in time.

This marks Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt’s highest opening day ever. Earlier, Varun Dhawan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol-starrer Dilwale as his biggest opener with an earning of Rs 21 crore whereas Alia Bhatt also has Kalank as her highest opener after her recent Gully Boy .

Karan Johar produced film is the highest openers of 2019 so far, while Anurag Singh’s Kesari ranked in Rs 21.06 crores, Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy stood at No. 2 with a Day 1 collection of Rs 19.40 crore, followed by Indra Kumar’s Total Dhamaal which earned Rs 16.50 crore.

Bollywood trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Kalank starts with a bang… Emerges biggest opener of 2019 *so far*… Plexes terrific… Impressive cast and hype + massive screen count [4000] + #MahavirJayanti holiday have contributed to a big total… Wed ₹ 21.60 cr. India biz.”

“Kalank is coming from one of the topmost production houses, Dharma, which is the pioneer of making mega-budget movies. Releasing in the middle of the week, it is cashing in on the holiday of Mahavir Jayanti. The makers are looking at a mammoth release and are eyeing maximum numbers before Avengers: Endgame release on April 26. Having a long weekend, I expect a good start as it looks big.” said Girish Johar.
