EC lets off Adityanath over ‘Modiji ki sena’ remark

The Election Commission has released a statement saying that Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent references to “Modiji ki sena” had violated its instructions asking political party campaigners to refrain from using the defence forces for political propaganda, and advised him to be more careful in the future.

Adityanath had made the comments at a rally in Ghaziabad on April 1.

“Commission has averred that Yogi, being a senior leader, was expected to be more responsible with his public utterances. It has accordingly asked him to be more mindful of EC instructions in the future and avoid any references to the defence forces during elections,” said Election Commission in a statement.

“Being a senior leader, he should be extremely careful. The commission is not satisfied with the explanation and advises Yogi Adityanath to be cautious while making statements at public rallies,” EC added.

“Congress ke log aatankwadiyon ko biryani khilate the aur Modi ji ki sena aatankwadiyon ko goli aur gola deti hai (Congress people would feed biryani to terrorists, while Modi’s army gives them bullet or bomb). This is the difference. The Congress people use ‘ji’ in Masood Azhar’s name to encourage terrorism,” CM Yogi had said, campaigning for Ghaziabad MP and Union minister VK Singh.

ECI advised the CM to be extra cautious, an official said. The commission had issued a notice to the CM on April 3 for his comments made at a rally in Ghaziabad. The notice was issued after it studied a transcript of the CM’s speech from the state chief electoral officer.
