US House to sue to block Trump border wall funding action

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday said that the US House of Representatives will sue to block President Donald Trump’s transfer of money to pay for a wall along the border with Mexico.

“The President’s action clearly violates the Appropriations Clause by stealing from appropriated funds, an action that was not authorized by constitutional or statutory authority,” the top Democrat in Congress, said in a statement.

“The House will once again defend our Democracy and our Constitution, this time in the courts. No one is above the law or the Constitution, not even the President,” Pelosi added.

The Democratic-controlled House passed legislation in retaliation to terminate the emergency Trump declared at the U.S.-Mexico border but Trump issued the first veto of his presidency in March to block that measure.

US President Donald Trump had a week ago threatened to close the border with Mexico to trade if immigrants are not stopped. Mexico in response has said that it does not act on the basis of threats.

“We’re going to give them a one-year warning, and if the drugs don’t stop, or largely stop, we’re going to put tariffs on Mexico and products – in particular, cars. The whole ballgame is cars,” Trump had told the reporters.

Trump’s border-shutdown warning came more than a month after the end of a partial government shutdown triggered by a fight in Congress over Trump’s demands for funding for the wall at the Mexico border.

Trump made immigration a centrepiece of his 2016 run for the White House, pledging to build a wall on the border to stop migrants.
