India Russia strengthening multipolarity and multilateralism in rapidly changing world
On Friday, October 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a press statement that India-Russia are unanimous in strengthening multipolarity and multilateralism and cooperating closely in all international issues of mutual interest.
PM Modi and Russian President had detailed discussions on bilateral and international matters that included cross border terrorism, Iran Nuclear deal, situation in Afghanistan, and threats to multilateralism.
PM Modi said, “India and Russia have been cooperating closely in all international issues of mutual interest. President Putin and I also had detailed discussions on these issues”.
In the rapidly changing world, multilateralism is under threat. Recently German chancellor Angela Merkel slammed US President Donald Trump for creating threats to multilateralism by using tools like trade war and protectionism.

The solution to global problems can be found through multilateralism only. PM Modi said that India-Russia have common interest in multilateral organizations emphasized that Russia-India will continue their cooperation and coordination in international institutions.
He said, “India and Russia are unanimous in strengthening multipolarity and multilateralism in this rapidly changing world. Both our countries have common interests in cooperating on terrorism, developments in Afghanistan and Indo-pacific, climate change, regional organizations like SCO, BRICS and multilateral organizations like the G20 and ASEAN. We have agreed to continue our beneficial cooperation and coordination in international institutions”.
The Indo-Russian joint statement said, “To address the threats of chemical and biological terrorism, the Sides supported and emphasized the need for launching multilateral negotiations at the Conference on Disarmament on an international convention for the suppression of acts of chemical and biological terrorism”.
The statement said, “The Sides reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of international law and the centrality of the United Nations in international relations. Both Sides share the view that implementation in good faith of generally recognized principles and rules of international law excludes the practice of double standards or imposition by some States of their will on other States, and consider that imposition of unilateral coercive measures not based on international law, is an example of such practice”.
