Mumbai CST bridge collapse: 6 dead and 33 injured

A foot overbridge connecting Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) railway station Platform 1 North end with BT Lane in Mumbai collapsed on Thursday evening killing 6 people. Over 33 people were reportedly injured.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to family members of those who died and Rs 50,000 to injured in the Mumbai CST foot overbridge collapse.

“Pained to hear about the FOB incident near TOI building in Mumbai. Spoke to BMC Commissioner and @MumbaiPolice officials and instructed to ensure speedy relief efforts in coordination with @RailMinIndia officials,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tweeted.

“An ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to the families of those who died in the incident and compensation of Rs 50,000 each will be given to the injured. The state govt will provide for their treatment,” Devendra Fadnavis said.

“The incident is unfortunate. I’ve ordered a high-level inquiry. A structural audit of the bridge had earlier been done and the bridge was found to be fit. An inquiry will be done and strictest action will be taken,” Devendra Fadnavis said.

“Deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to the foot overbridge accident in Mumbai. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. Wishing that the injured recover at the earliest. The Maharashtra Government is providing all possible assistance to those affected,” tweeted Prime Minister Modi.

According to the Railway Ministry, the overbridge was under the control of Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai CorporationSena lawmaker Anil Desai has denied the claim. State minister Vinod Tawde said both Railways and the civic body would investigate the matter.

Maharashtra minister Tawde said, “The bridge wasn’t in a bad condition, it required minor repairs for which work was underway. Why it was not closed until the work was completed —that will also be probed”.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of the #MumbaiBridgeCollapse, our thoughts & prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives & we wish the injured a speedy recovery. We urge all Congress workers to help in any way they can,” the Congress tweeted.
