Trump praises US military in rare Independence Day speech

US President Donald Trump has praised the military in his Independence Day speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC amid a display of military strength.

“We celebrate our history, our people, and the heroes who proudly defend our flag — the brave men and women of the United States military!” said the President Thursday.

Trump became the first US president in more than 70 years to deliver an Independence Day address.

Trump however delivered a surprisingly scripted speech in which he outlined the history of Independence Day and the history of American achievement in various fields.

Trump discussed U.S. accomplishments, from Alexander Graham Bell and the telephone to the Wright Brothers and the airplane. However, in discussing the  he said, “our Army manned the air, it rammed the American Revolution ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do.”

There was no air travel in 18th Century America.

He then later paid tribute to each branch of the military in turn, with each section followed by a fly over of aircraft, as the official song of each military branch was played. Trump further promised that America would “plant the American flag on Mars”.

Trump said the country’s future “rests on the shoulders of men and women willing to defend it.”

“As long as we stay true to our cause, as long as we remember our great history and as long as we never stop fighting for a better future, then there will be nothing that America cannot do,” he said.

Trump also urged people present in the crowd to join up to the military and “make a truly great statement in life.”
