Anurag Thakur’s hike through the ranks : From BCCI to Union Cabinet

Former BCCI chief Anurag Singh Thakur, son of former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Prem Kumar Dhumal, entered the big league after being assigned as a Minister of State in the Finance Ministry in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet.

Born on 24 October, 1974, Anurag Thakur did his graduation from the Doaba College in Punjab’s Jalandhar, where his father used to teach before joining politics.

He won his first Lok Sabha election in May 2008, and won again in 2014. In May 2016, he was elected the BCCI president after the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya.

This is for the fourth time that Anurag Thakur won by defeating Ram Lal Thakur of the Congress by nearly four lakh votes. He has got a vote share of 69.04 per cent by pocketing over 6.8 lakh votes.

Last month, at an election rally in Himachal Pradesh, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah promised to make Anurag Thakur a “big leader” if voters in Hamirpur elected him with a record margin. And Shah kept his word, as Anurag Thakur is assigned as the Minister of State in the Finance Ministry.

“You elect Anurag with a record margin, I will make him a big leader,” Amit Shah told the  voters at an election rally in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, on May 12.

A former Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) president, Thakur led a march from Kolkata to Srinagar under the banner of ‘Rashtriya Ekta Yatra’ to unfurl the national flag at Lal Chowk on 26 January, 2011. Anurag Thakur had received the ‘Best Young Parliamentarian Award’ in 2011. He had also remained chief whip of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha.
