Tharoor questions BJP on Statue of Unity, why there is no statue of that size for the Mahatma Gandhi

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor questioned BJP on 182 meter Statue of Unity that Sardar Patel was a very simple person and a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, why there is such a big statue of a disciple of Gandhiji and not of Mahatma.

Addressing a function at the district Congress Committee office, Tharoor said, “The biggest one is in Parliament. But this is a 182 meter statue for his disciple. Why is there such a big statue for a disciple of Gandhiji in the country where there is no statue of that size for the Mahatma?”

He said, “Patel, a very simple person, was known as the disciple of Gandhiji. I am asking a question…Is it right to erect such an imposing statue of Patel, a man of simplicity and a true Gandhian, who moved along with poor peasants”.

Tharoor said that BJP have no answer of his question and alleged BJP of trying to hijack the legacy of freedom fighters that were associated with Congress as BJP had no such leaders and don’t have its own history. He said that Patel was a Congress leader and we should remember him.

He said, “Patel had worked along with Gandhiji and strengthened the Congress party. We should remember him always”.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated 182 meter Statue of Unity to the nation as a tribute to the first Home Minister of India and a great unifier who united more than 550 princely states to make ‘One India, Great India’.

In the inaugural ceremony said that statue of Sardar Patel is an answer to those who questions India’s existence and shows that India was, is and will always be eternal. The statue is made on the bed of Narmada River about 3.2 km far from Narmada dam in Kevadiya district of Gujarat.
