In Tamil Nadu, Modi hits out at critics of 10% quota

Strongly defending the recent constitutional amendment to create 10% reservation in jobs and education for economically weaker sections (EWS), Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday alleged that certain self-centred forces in Tamil Nadu were trying to create an atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust among people on the new quota.

“Any person who has cheated or looted the country shall be brought to justice. This is regardless of whether he is in India or abroad,” he said.

While targeting the Grand Alliance of opposition parties comprising of Congress and DMK, Modi said that the centre’s proactive efforts against corruption has created a stir from Chennai to Delhi.

“All those who were used to making deals in government contracts, defence deals and welfare schemes are now facing the music. That is why they are all coming together. These parties are keeping aside all other consideration and uniting to remove the “watchman”,” he asserted.

He said that any political concept that opposes the poor cannot benefit anyone. In Tamil Nadu, both the ruling AIADMK in the state and principal opposition party DMK opposed to the reservation on basis of economic criteria. Modi asserted that his government is taking effective steps to rid the country of corruption and nepotism.

The Dravidian parties in Tamil Nadu have strongly opposed the new reservation, with the DMK and the Dravidar Kazhagam challenging it in the Madras High Court.

BJP supporters were tweeting using the hashtags #MaduraiThanksModi and #TNWelcomesModi while those opposing his visit were using #GoBackModi and #GoBackSadistModi. Interestingly #GoBackModi trend worldwide in Twitter on Sunday afternoon.
