Trump Declares Major Disaster in Kerr County, Texas After Floods Leave Dozens Missing

President Donald Trump on Saturday signed a Major Disaster Declaration for Kerr County, Texas, following devastating floods that swept through the region, leaving entire communities underwater and many residents still unaccounted for. The declaration enables federal funding and resources to flow immediately to the affected areas, including emergency aid for first responders and recovery operations.

“An unimaginable tragedy”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the situation “an unimaginable tragedy,” noting that “many lives [have been] lost, and many still missing.” He praised the U.S. Coast Guard and state emergency personnel for saving more than 850 people, while also spotlighting the efforts of Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who visited the flood zone on Friday.

There’s no exact number yet on the total missing or deceased. According to early estimates by local officials, over 2,000 homes may be affected across Kerr and adjacent counties. Infrastructure damage is widespread, with roads and bridges washed out in several towns. Emergency shelters have been set up across the Hill Country to house evacuees.

Federal coordination ramps up

This move marks one of the first major domestic disaster responses of Trump’s second term, and it’s being watched closely. FEMA, along with state officials, has begun deploying disaster assistance teams and assessing long-term recovery needs. “We’re working hand-in-hand with local leaders to make sure no family is left behind,” one FEMA spokesperson said in a press briefing.

The involvement of Kristi Noem, recently appointed Homeland Security Secretary, also draws attention. Her hands-on appearance in Texas is a clear signal from the administration that it wants to appear both responsive and empathetic—especially in a region that strongly backed Trump in the 2024 election.

A political layer beneath the mud

To be honest, this reminds me of how disaster response often reveals not just what a government does, but how it wants to be seen. For Trump, the visual of federal coordination, life-saving missions, and heartfelt appeals may offer a kind of narrative pivot—from his aggressive immigration and foreign policy agenda to a more grounded, statesmanlike role.

But of course, there will be scrutiny too. Funding, logistics, and coordination with local authorities—all of it will be tested in the weeks ahead. The floodwaters may recede, but questions about preparedness, climate vulnerability, and resource allocation are likely to stay.
