Trump Says He “Saved” Iran’s Supreme Leader From Death During War With Israel

In an extraordinary message posted Friday on Truth Social, U.S. President Donald Trump made a sweeping and dramatic claim: that he personally spared the life of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during the final stages of the recent Israel-Iran war — even as U.S. and Israeli forces reportedly had Khamenei in their sights.

The former-turned-current president, known for his brash style and unapologetic rhetoric, painted a picture of near-apocalyptic destruction in Iran. In his words, the Islamic Republic’s three “evil” nuclear sites were “obliterated,” its economy “horrible,” and its military “decimated.” But even amid that chaos, Trump insists he intervened to stop what could have been a final, devastating blow.

“I knew EXACTLY where he was sheltered,” Trump wrote, referring to Khamenei. “I SAVED HIM FROM A VERY UGLY AND IGNOMINIOUS DEATH.”

Iran’s claim of victory — and Trump’s sharp response

The post was apparently triggered by remarks from Ayatollah Khamenei, who allegedly declared that Iran had “won the war” with Israel. While the full context of Khamenei’s comments remains unclear, Iranian state-linked media outlets such as PressTV have claimed that Israel’s withdrawal from targeted air campaigns was a sign of deterrence rather than defeat.

Trump flatly rejected that narrative. “It is not so,” he said, describing Khamenei’s statement as “a lie” and “foolish.” He criticized the Ayatollah’s religious authority, saying that as a “man of great faith, he is not supposed to lie.”

Sanctions relief off the table — for now

In a surprising turn, Trump also revealed that he had been considering rolling back sanctions and initiating post-war recovery measures for Iran — until Khamenei’s statement hardened his stance. “I immediately dropped all work on sanction relief,” he wrote, calling the Iranian leadership “angry, hostile, and unhappy.”

The economic strain on Iran is well-documented. U.S.-led sanctions have significantly squeezed the country’s oil exports, with revenues dropping by more than 80% since 2018, according to Brookings. Inflation remains high, and youth unemployment hovers around 25%, per World Bank data.

The final airstrike — and a pulled punch?

Perhaps the most explosive revelation was Trump’s account of a planned final strike by Israeli aircraft heading toward Tehran. He says he ordered the mission canceled to prevent mass civilian casualties, implying a level of command authority that is unusual in U.S. foreign operations involving allied nations.

“It was going to be the biggest attack of the War, by far,” he claimed. “Many Iranians would have been killed.”

Whether or not the mission was as imminent or large-scale as described is difficult to verify. Israel has not publicly acknowledged such plans, and U.S. defense officials have not commented on the specifics.

“More with honey…”

Trump ended the post on an almost philosophical note, urging Iran to rejoin the global diplomatic fold. “You often get more with HONEY than you do with VINEGAR,” he wrote, echoing a proverb that seems at odds with the preceding 400 words of fire and fury.

Still, for all the bravado, there’s a signal in the noise: Trump may be leaving the door cracked open — just barely — for diplomacy. Whether Iran’s leadership will walk through it is another matter entirely.
