Trump Slams Netanyahu Trial, Calls for Immediate Pardon

In a characteristically impassioned Truth Social post on June 26, President Donald Trump delivered a fiery defense of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu, condemning the ongoing corruption trial against the Israeli leader as a “ridiculous Witch Hunt” and urging either its cancellation or a full pardon.

Trump, who returned to the White House in January 2025, framed Netanyahu’s legal ordeal as not just unfair but deeply insulting to a leader he credits with defending Israel during one of its most dangerous moments. “Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel,” Trump wrote, referring to their joint response to what he described as an imminent nuclear threat from Iran.

A wartime bond turned political defense

The two leaders have long had a complex, at times transactional, relationship. But Trump’s latest post suggests a renewed public solidarity, rooted in what he described as shared “HELL” during Israel’s recent conflict with Iran — a conflict that remains murky in public record but was widely reported as having involved Israeli strikes on suspected Iranian nuclear facilities, as detailed by Reuters.

According to Trump, Netanyahu played a key role in a mission that allegedly resulted in the “elimination” of what he claimed was one of the world’s most powerful nuclear weapons being developed “soon” by Iran. That statement, while dramatic, has not been independently confirmed by U.S. intelligence or international nuclear watchdogs like the IAEA.

The trial Trump wants canceled

Netanyahu is currently facing a long-running corruption trial in Israel, a saga dating back to May 2020. The charges include accepting expensive gifts like cigars and champagne, as well as allegedly seeking favorable media coverage — though Trump dismissively described the case as revolving around “cigars, a Bugs Bunny doll, and numerous other unfair charges.”

Critics in Israel and abroad see the trial as a necessary check on a powerful figure. Supporters, however, echo Trump’s concern that the judiciary is being weaponized. The trial, resumed this week in Jerusalem District Court, marks the first time a sitting Israeli Prime Minister has stood trial, as reported by Haaretz.

A Trump doctrine on political loyalty?

What’s emerging here is another example of Trump’s personal loyalty doctrine — the belief that political allies, especially those he perceives as having stood by him, should be shielded from legal consequences. “There is nobody in Israel’s History that fought harder… than Bibi Netanyahu,” Trump insisted.

And then came his closer: “It was the United States of America that saved Israel, and now it is going to be the United States of America that saves Bibi Netanyahu.”

To be honest, this reminds me of Trump’s approach during his first term — where pardons were less about judicial nuance and more about allegiance. Whether that sentiment can extend beyond Truth Social and into Israeli law, of course, is another matter entirely.
