Government issues warning for the rising water levels of river Beas in Himachal Pradesh

In an advisory, Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district administration has asked locals and tourists to stay away from river Beas due to increase in water levels.

Sub Divisional Magistrate, Dehra (Kangra), Dhanver Thakur said that the gates of Pandoh Dam on the river may be opened at any point of time and the advisory has been issued to avert any mishap.

Warning has been issued for people living in areas like Rakkad, Jaswana, Dadasiba, Haripura and Pragpur.

According to the reports, the water levels have dangerously increased due to melting of snow on the peaks in the catchment area of the river, said the Dehra Magistrate Dhanver Thakur.

The river rises in the Himalayas in central Himachal Pradesh, India, and flows for some 470 kilometres to the Sutlej River in the Indian state of Punjab. Its total length is 470 kilometres and its drainage basin is 20,303 square kilometres large.

The water of the Beas river is allocated to India under the terms of the Indus Waters Treaty between India and Pakistan.
