IAF preparing for fly-past to mark National War Memorial inauguration

The newly-built National War Memorial will receive an air salute on January 25. The Indian Air Force (IAF) will have a flypast of helicopters and SU-30 MKI fighter aircraft during the memorial’s inauguration in the coming days, said a top officer here on Wednesday.

The IAF’s Assistant Chief of Air Staff Operations (Space), Air Vice Marshal RGK Kapoor said on Wednesday: “For the inauguration of National War Memorial at the India Gate, we are planning to fly past three helicopters and also a fly-past by SU 30.”

For the first time in the Republic Day parade, AN 32 helicopter will fly with 10 percent biofuels. The officer said that using bio-fuel will lessen the import bill.

“This environment-friendly fuel will also help in reducing carbon footprint,” he added, while talking to media persons, requesting not to be named.

On the contingent to march to the tune of Astronaut, the officer said, “We are proud to march to the tune of Astronaut. We are part of aero and space. It is well suited to us.”

Reports claim that the memorial will consist of four concentric circles- Amar Chakra (circle of immortality), Veer Chakra (circle of bravery), Tyag Chakra (circle of sacrifice) and Rakshak Chakra (circle of protection). There will also be busts of 21 Param Vir Chakra awardees.

On the other hand, India Gate was constructed by the British in memory of the 84,000 Indian soldiers killed fighting for the Empire in World War I and the Afghan campaign. The Amar Jawan Jyoti was later built under its arch to honour the 3,843 soldiers who died in the 1971 war.
