Kazakhstan to join India at UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon

Defence Minister of India, Nirmala Sitharaman visited Kazakhstan for three days, October 2 onwards and discussed a wide range of issues related to defence and military technical cooperation.

Defence minister Sitharaman met the defence minister of Kazakhstan Nurlan Yermekbayev, and minister of Defence and Aerospace Industry Beibut Atamkulov during her visit.

India and Kazakhstan have strategic partnership since 2009 and renewed the defence cooperation MoU in January 2017. Defence cooperation includes military-technical cooperation, military education and training, joint military exercises, bilateral exchange of visits and cadet youth exchange programs.

The defence ministry statement said that Kazakhstan contingent will join Indian contingent in UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon that shows India’s support to Kazakhstan in its efforts to contribute to world peace.

The statement said, “The Kazakhstan contingent that will join the Indian contingent at United Nations International Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon. India’s partnership with Kazakhstan in UN Peacekeeping reflects its desire to support Kazakhstan in its contribution to global peace”.

It added, “The contingents of both countries worked together over the past one year to prepare for this joint deployment.  The Kazakh contingent will join the Indian Contingent at Lebanon by the end of this month”.

Sitharaman discussed the issues of defence production with Minister of Defence and Aerospace of Kazakhstan and discussed the regional issues with the Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov, who appreciated India’s role in UN peacekeeping missions.

The statement said, “In this connection, the possibilities of joint production and/or co-production were discussed based upon the relative strengths and experience of both sides”.

Adding further, “She also discussed regional developments with the Kazakhstan Foreign Minister Mr. Kairat Abdrakhmanov. The Kazakhstan FM appreciated India’s position and experience as a major force in UN Peace Keeping and contributor peace building in various parts of the world under the UN mandate”.

Sitharaman invited Defence Minister and Minister of Defence and Aerospace Industry to visit India to attend Aero India 2019 that will be held in Bengaluru in February 2019.
