India Calls for Paving the BRICS Way for Iran by Any Means
The NSA of India, Ajit Doval has expressed India’s commitment to support Iran’s accession to the BRICS group of emerging countries.
Doval, during a meeting with Ali-Akbar Ahmadian, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, on the sidelines of the BRICS NSA and ‘Friends of BRICS’ meeting, emphasized that Iran’s membership in BRICS would enhance its economic and political capacities.
India is determined to use all available means and opportunities to pave the way for Iran’s full membership in the bloc, he further added. The two-day 13th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security commenced in Johannesburg, South Africa.
It is noteworthy that Iran is among several countries seeking membership in the BRICS, and it has formally applied to join the body.
It marked the inaugural encounter between NSA Doval and Ahmadian, who took up the position of Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on May 22, as appointed by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
Prior to his appointment, Ahmadian held the position of overseeing the strategic center of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
During the meeting, Ahmadian called for further strengthening of bilateral ties between India & Iran. He said that both countries share common positions and concerns regarding counterterrorism and drug trafficking, and Iran expressed its willingness to enhance cooperation with India in these areas.
He praised the India-assisted Chabahar port in Iran as a symbol of cooperation and urged swift action on agreements regarding transportation, energy, and banking cooperation between the two countries.
