Indo-Pacific strategy may divide Asia into two camps

Chinese state run media outlet ‘Global Times’ wrote about US’ divisive Indo-Pacific strategy in its editorial and said that from this strategy of  US, Asia may divide into two camps, which will inevitably exacerbate conflicts in the region and damage the milieu for India’s development. Indo-Pacific strategy will lead to the stepped up presence of US in Indian Ocean and it will threaten India’s leadership position in the region.

Global Times said in its editorial, “India had a rich civilization in ancient times and made great contributions to human progress in science and technology. Although having been colonized in modern times, its people have never given up the dream to be part of a great power.”

Newspaper also cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement at Shangri-La dialogue as a proof of India not accepting the US strategy. PM Modi said, “India does not see the Indo-Pacific region as a strategy or a club of limited members. Nor as a grouping that seeks to dominate. And by no means do we consider it as directed against any country. A geographical definition, as such, cannot be.”

Global Times further added, “If engaged in confrontation with china, India has to divert resources from infrastructure and education to defence, which will be a drag on economic growth. On the contrary, joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) helps India secure a safe passage to central Asia, ensuring oil and gas supply. Cooperation with China is more suitable for India’s infrastructure and manufacturing base.”

Global Times suggested that Indo-Pacific strategy is more beneficial for US than India so India should join Shanghai Cooperation Organization for future prospect. In the Indo-Pacific strategy, India can only be a subordinate, which is unacceptable to Indians.
