India US relations, on an amazing positive trajectory: Senior US official

On Friday, September 28, 2018 the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of South and Central Asia Region Alice Wells said that India and US are global partners and both countries are willing to work together on global challenges for peace and prosperity.

Wells mentioned about the meeting between Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale and US Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale, held at the begning of the 73rd session of United Nations General Assembly, and said that the meeting was to build the momentum of 2+2 dialogue between India and US.

During briefing on US priorities in South and Central Asia, Alice Wells told reporters, “We really are global partners and the meeting (between David Hale and Vijay Gokhale) reaffirmed our shared commitment to working together on international challenges – from a denuclearised Korean Peninsula to a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan”.

Wells said, “It’s a conversation that really covers the map in terms of how we can work together in Afghanistan, what we are doing to promote free and open Indo-Pacific and also in particular, how we are both very supportive of the democratic developments that we see transpiring in the Maldives”.

Wells said that US also supports India’s bid as a permanent member of UN Security Council. US president supported India’s bid as a permanent member of UN security council and for Nuclear Suppliers Group during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington last year in June.

A joint statement statement after the meeting between two leaders, in June 2017, said, “As global non-proliferation partners, the United States expressed strong support for India’s early membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the Wassenaar Arrangement, and the Australia Group”.

Wells described India-US relations on an “amazing positive trajectory” and said that President Trump is expected to visit India, Wells told PTI on Friday, “President Trump does look forward to visiting India again to reflect on what has been an amazingly positive trajectory in our relationship”.
